Writers, Book Makers and Crafters Gather at Lowe House Project in Old Town Tubac
Welcomes, words and wondrous creative discovery converge at the Lowe House Project artist residency and workshop center in Old Town Tubac during October. Now in it’s third year, the Lowe House Project launches it’s season of sharing, learning, inspiration and hands-on fun with an array of events, workshops and playshops.
For starters, Tubac author Bill Stephenson is hosting a writer’s group organizational meeting on Wednesday, October 12 from 4 p.m.–6 p.m. Stephenson invites writers to come meet and greet and “take it from there” as he says. Stephenson is following the tradition of other fellow writers who in the past have gathered in the Lowe House living room sharing works in progress and lively discussion. Consistent with events all things books this month and new to the Lowe House Project line up of “playshop” presenters is Susan Corl who will be offering a Decorative Papers and Handmade Artists Book Making Playshop. For two days, Thursday and Friday October 20-21, Corl will encourage participants to have fun like a kid playing with paints, glue and crayons resulting in beautiful decorative papers for one-of-a-kind handmade books. As a former member of the Arizona Commission of the Arts Roster and teaching artist, Susan has conducted artist-in-residencies and playshops for all ages throughout Arizona. Corl says she has as much fun teaching as her students do “playing.” She provides all materials for each of her playshops. Susan’s work is shown and sold at the Creative Spirit Artists Gallery in Patagonia where she has lived, created and inspired since 1987.

In keeping with the theme of discovering one’s creativity via writing and bookmaking, Carol St. John— accomplished author, oil painter, watercolorist, poet, activist and columnist for the “Tubac Villager”—returns to Tubac for an always inspiring free talk about where ideas come from on October 26 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. St. John will share the genesis and the premise of her 5-Star rated book “Taproots…Where Ideas Are Born.” Seating is limited and reservations can be made by contacting [email protected].
The Lowe House Project is a 501 ( c ) 3 non profit established in 2014 by retired surgeon, winemaker, musician and sculptor Gerhard Anderson who lived and worked in the Historic Lowe House.
The Lowe House Project is located at 14 Calle Iglesia in Old Town Tubac in the the Historic Lowe House–portions of which date back 250 years. For the past 50 years, the Lowe House has offered live/work, studio and gallery space for working artists—many of whom have contributed to the growth and sustainability of Tubac’s artist colony.
The Historic Lowe House is one of the stops on the Old Town Tubac Historic Adobe Building Tour on November 12th being co-sponsored by the Lowe House Project and the Tubac Historical Society. Exhibits of Tubac’s early artists and current artists’ work will be hung in the Lowe House Project’s galleries.
